Chapter 8

The smell of coffee and the sound of off tune whistling awoke her from slumber. She was lying on the camping bed with both blankets tucked around her. The crackle of the fire brought a sense of peace to her as she sat up and stretched.

Memories of the last few hours brought a smile to her lips. Her host was not as bad as she originally made him out to be. He was honest enough to tell her how he felt, but stated emphatically that he would not touch her until she was ready. She respected that because there weren’t many men who would respect her.

They had talked about everything to do with family, which slowly transitioned into getting to talk about themselves. Talking to him was pretty easy as he made her relax. She found herself slowly drawn to this open and honest fellow, who wore his heart on his sleeves. Most men were reserved, his their feelings and were afraid to let women know when they were in pain. Diego didn’t go bawling his eyes out, but he did express how much he missed his family and the regret he felt now they were gone.

He kept the promise he made to himself by buying back his father’s company as well as the mountain lodge and surrounding lands. It was his father’s dream to retire there. Listening to him helped her to realize how much she missed out with her own mother and she made a promise to herself that she would make things right the first chance she got. She didn’t want to spend her life regretting not forgiving her.

With a shrug, she pushed aside the blanket and stood. It was then she noticed her luggage sitting by the door. Also noticeable was the absence of the wind as all seemed quiet, except for Diego tinkering and whistling in the kitchen. Nicole quickly folded the blanket and pulled the sleeper to the side before heading over to the kitchen. Thankfully, she was walking much better than a few hours ago. This she was grateful for.

“Why are my bags by the door?” She demanded.

“Buenas dias to you too,” was his reply.

“Good morning, now answer my question.”

He twirled the spatula he was holding through his fingers before setting it down on the counter and coming to stand a foot away from her.

“After breakfast, I will take you to the lodge.”

With a shake of her head, she answered, “I’m not riding on your snowmobile.”

“We’re using my truck. It has a snow plow and I have to clear the driveway there.”

“You can take my bags back to the bedroom, I’m not going anywhere.”

Diego’s brows knitted as he looked at her with narrowed eyes. “You said you wanted to leave when the storm was over. The storm is over. We will leave as soon as we finish breakfast and I clear the snow from the deck.”

“Are you kicking me out?”

“No,” he replied. “I am doing as you asked.”

“And now, I am saying I will stay.
